Yesterday afternoon my parents and I went to the woods because we wished to see Atmostheatre's latest production, The Frogs by Aristophanes. Atmostheatre owns a lovely plot of land in Woodside that they have outfitted with a set of small outdoor stages, and they pick material that will suit the scenery, often walking the audience from one scene to the next over the course of a play. In this case we start with Dionysus and his smart-mouth slave Xanthias outside the house of Herakles, hike down with them to meet Charon and a chorus of giant frogs near the river Styx, sneak past Cerberus into Hades and finally arrive at the amphitheater where a poetry contest between the feuding (and dead) Euripides and Aeschylus takes place. It is a brilliant incorporation of the material into the landscape, and the performers take many opportunities to improv during the "traveling" bits that I'm sure would have delighted Aristophanes, the playwright who often broke the fourth wall to make the audience laugh at itself and quite possibly invented meta-theater in the process...almost 2500 years ago. This classics nerd was also very happy with the English adaptation by Stuart Bousel (who also directed), with plenty of obscure Greek references intact and certainly all of the humor and wit. The shift of male judge Aeacus into Persephone is a relatively minor change, and Katarina Fabic as Persephone owns the stage when she is on it, a domineering queen of the underworld. Nathan Tucker as an over-the-top Dionysus and B. Warden Lawlor as the more practical Xanthias are also spot-on hilarious, and they are backed up by a wonderful supporting cast of Furies and other residents of Hades. And a special shout-out to everyone who worked on the production design, full of clever little touches very true to the spirit and art of ancient Greece. As Aristophanes himself might have said: Yay.

This is my fourth time seeing what Atmos Theatre has in store and they only get better with age. The trip out to the far reaches of Woodside might give you pause but it is a Haley's Comet opportunity to see theatre in a glorious setting. I won't forget how the sun cast its own spotlight on Euripedes and Aeschylus as they gave their orations stage right. Some performers were easier to hear than others, but more importantly, the meaning of each line carried. The actors looked like they were enjoying themselves.

The company has also labored to make a safe environment for its audience. The pathways and bridges are finally at a point where you could say, I think that meets code. Go see this show!

I truly had a blast attending the previews. It was really the perfect way to spend an afternoon - A nice little picnic, some wine, and a walk through a forest to see a hilarious cast make a Greek play really accessible and hilarious. Well worth the drive, and the perfect reason to get out of the city for an afternoon.

Bravo! for FROGS. Great surprises, superb acting, excellent humor (I laughed more than I thought I would), and the woodsy/hiking trail path to each stage was very creative. The actors' commitment to their characters really pulls you in and creates a deep level of involvement for the audience.
Definitely go early and bring a picnic lunch. It allows you time to enjoy the fresh air and camaraderie of the other people before enjoying the performance. I also *highly* recommend going. Just marvelous!

I thought this show was fantastic! I found the subject matter to be very apropos to today's current art scene, and I recommend it to any fighter for the arts. Nathan Tucker, Carl Lucania, and Ben Fischer give steller performances (as Dionysus, Aeschylus, and Euripides respectively) and the atmosphere for the show was heightened by the whole forest of Woodside. I can't wait to see it again!

I jjust returned from a wonderful afternoon of theater--in the woods at Woodside, a mere 40 minute drive from SF! Some friends introduced me to the Atmos Theater, and I'm so glad I jumped to join them for the opening weekend. How often can you enjoy time out in a gorgeous natural setting and also see a great play?
The audience can gather to enjoy a picnic lunch (blankets provided-bring your own food and wine) and then are led along a meandering trail to three different stages. Their play this year was an adaptation of The Frogs " a Greek comedy by Aristophanes. I wasn't sure how much I would get into a Greek play but this adaptation instantly hooked me in with the broad British accents and mildly bawdy banter between Diyonisus and his slave. It reminded me of a Greek tale as told by Monty Python. The whole play is fully entertaining both in the performance itself and the incorporation of the natural elements into the play. (Especially helpful for Act 2)
I *highly* recommend this show. And it only runs weekends through the first one in September so plan your outing soon.
My tips: read the background of the play in the program--it is a very helpful to give historical perspective and points to how the same elements being debated can be relevant today.
